At Women Centres Connect, International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the strength, leadership, and resilience of women and gender-diverse people across our province. It is also a time to recommit ourselves to the work ahead.
This year, we join the global call led by the United Nations under the theme: Rights. Justice. Action.
Women’s rights mean nothing if we cannot defend them. International Women’s Day 2026 comes at a time when justice systems are under strain. Conflict, repression, and political tensions are weakening the rule of law.
The result: women and girls have just 64% of the legal rights that men have. Women are turned away, not believed, revictimized, or priced out of legal support. Equality never arrives.
Across Nova Scotia, women’s centres are marking the day in meaningful and community-rooted ways:
Community Gatherings & Open Houses – Centres are opening their doors to welcome new and familiar faces, offering space for connection, conversation, and collective reflection.
Panel Discussions & Storytelling Events – Local leaders, advocates, and community members are sharing lived experiences and exploring what rights, equality, and empowerment look like in our communities.
Creative Workshops – From art builds to zine-making and vision boarding, participants are expressing their hopes for a more just and equitable future.
Advocacy & Education Campaigns – Centres are highlighting key issues such as gender-based violence prevention, pay equity, reproductive justice, housing security, and access to culturally responsive services.
Youth-Focused Programming – Special events are uplifting girls and gender-diverse youth, encouraging leadership, confidence, and civic engagement.
In our communities, the spirit of International Women’s Day is grounded in connection and action. Our centres remain committed to providing safe, welcoming, and inclusive spaces where women and gender-diverse people are heard, supported, and valued.
Whether you are a long-time supporter or visiting a women’s centre for the first time, you are welcome here. International Women’s Day belongs to all of us. Together, we can continue building communities rooted in rights, equality, and empowerment, today and every day.
