Does anyone else feel like September is the beginning of a new year? We often find our schedules getting busy again as students of all ages return to school, many bearing the stress of beginning a new grade, and many businesses and organizations attempt to shake off the sand and resume committees and regularly scheduled meetings that were on a summer hiatus.

Are you already looking forward to next year’s vacation?

We at Connect would like to help you balance the September rush by holding onto the “summer feeling” a little longer. With some thoughtful planning and mindset adjustments, you may be able to hold the winter blues at bay a little longer. Here are several strategies you can consider.
  • Labour Day – September 4
  • National Suicide Prevention Day – September 10
  • The Women’s Place Resource Centre – September 12
  • Gender Equality Week – September 18-24
  • International Day of Peace – September 21
  • Business Women’s Day – September 22
  • Orange Shirt Day (Truth and Reconciliation Day) – September 30
  • National Hispanic Month in Canada – the whole month of September

Facts Everyone Should Know
National Suicide Prevention Day
Every day, more than 10 people in Canada die by suicide. Even though it happens so frequently, there is still a lot of stigma around suicide and prevention efforts. That's why World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10 is so important. It's a day designed to bring awareness on how to prevent it.

Gender Equity Week
Estimates indicate that violence against women costs Canada more than $9.3 billion a year and if the gap between men's and women's employment continues at its present rate, Canada could lose as much as 8% in GDP growth over the next twenty years.

International Day of Peace
By nature, peaceful societies are more prosperous and stable. Unfortunately, violent conflict is the main cause of both humanitarian needs and forced displacement worldwide. Canada resettled more refugees than any other country last year, and Canadians have welcomed more than 1.1 million refugees in need of protection since 1980.

American Business Women's Day
It commemorates the important legacy and contributions of more than 68 million American working women and 7.7 million women business owners.

Orange Shirt Day (Truth and Reconciliation Day)

The history of residential schools was cast into the spotlight with the discovery of the remains of 215 children in an unmarked gravesite near the Kamloops Residential School on Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc territories in British Columbia, Canada on May 27, 2021. The announcement of the findings triggered shock, trauma, and national mourning, drawing global attention to an ugly history from which many have shied away for decades.

National Hispanic Month in Canada
According to Canadian official statistics, approximately 250,000 people reported Latin American origins in 2001; later modifications adjusted the number to 611,000. In 2016, the official number was about 640,000 or 2% of the population, but after the adjustment, it reached 1 million.
