Greetings Everyone,

At Connect this month we observe International Women's Day which happens to be one of our favourite days of the year. We also recognize the International Day of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and March is also Nutrition Month. This is often a time to emphasize the importance of eating well and a reminder of the old adage "we are what we eat". We at Connect are having difficulty "celebrating" food and nutrition this month, knowing that many of us are facing a food crisis due to the post-pandemic price of food. According to IPES Food, the world saw "record-breaking high food prices in February-May 2022", hitting food-insecure countries and rural populations hard. The number of undernourished people could increase by 13 million this year. We want to bring attention to the food crisis here in Nova Scotia - see our article below.

As if the pandemic wasn’t enough, our friends and neighbours are now facing a food cost crisis. Basic staples, such as bread, fruits, and vegetables, have been priced out of many budgets with their dramatically increased prices. In fact, the price of food has outpaced consumer inflation. There are a number of objective and measurable reasons for this: supply chain disruptions, labour shortages, changes in consumer purchasing patterns, poor weather in some growing regions, tariffs, higher input costs, and higher wages. Facts Everyone Should Know
International Women’s Day
In 2021, women represented over a third (35.6%) of people aged 15 and older in Canada who held a management position. Similarly, the proportion of women aged 15 and older in a senior management positions has risen, from 24.1% in 2001 to 30.9% in 2021.

International Day of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
A 2021 Statistics Canada analysis found that while police-reported crimes across the country were on a decline after five years of increases, in 2020, hate crimes increased by 37% since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
