Women's Centres Connect
The collective voice of Women’s Centres in Nova Scotia

November 1, 2022

Greetings Everyone,

As October turns into November, we at Connect have begun in earnest to prepare for the most important time of our advocacy calendar. The 16 Days of Activism begins on November 25 and runs until December 10, Human Rights Day, through to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The global theme for this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is “UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls”.

Book-ending our most passionate, most active lobbying with such important days is no coincidence. In addition to the 16 days, each year between November 13 and 19, people and organizations around the country participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help raise the visibility of transgender people and address issues members of the community face.

Without a doubt, we must Unite to raise our voices as much as possible to prevent and eliminate gender-based violence. In this newsletter, we have compiled resources, social media posts, stories and opportunities to make it easy for you to join us in our advocacy work.

Facts Everyone Should Know
The National Center for Transgender Equality employment website is a great resource that has all of the questions and answers that a trans employee would have. This can help them be more aware of and appreciate their rights in the workplace and elsewhere.

A girl or woman is killed in Canada every other day. Femicide is Real and Happening at Home.

Since 2018, the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability has documented the violent deaths of 700 women and girls, at least 90% of which have been killed by men.
