There are many important days in May to raise awareness and observe how our actions can change lives. This month, we address mental health, speech and hearing, vision health, mother's day, child and youth mental health, day of families, day against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, and day to end Obstetric Fistula.

The Power of Empathy
Mental Health Week is a national celebration introduced in Canada in 1951. Its 70-year-old purpose is to raise awareness so that we open our eyes and hearts to the consequences of mental health on our loved ones. Last year, the Canadian Mental Health Association created a campaign, #GetReal. It focused on getting individuals to name, deal with, and express their emotions. Individuals such as Canada’s Prime Minister, the Chief Public Health Minister, other civic leaders, and influencers participated in the campaign. Facts Everyone Should Know
Speech and Hearing Day:
  • Girls/women are three times less likely to have a speech impairment. Women are two times less likely to have hearing problems.
  • Men were more likely than women to have hearing loss—63% versus 46%—as were older adults compared with those aged 40 to 59 years.

Vision Health Month:
  • More girls (27.2%) than boys (19.4%) required glasses or contacts to achieve a score of 20/40 or better.
  • More women (59.2%) than men (53.8%) aged 40 to 79 required glasses or contacts to achieve a score of 20/40 or better.

Mental Health Week:
  • Men have higher rates of substance use disorders than women, while women have higher rates of mood and anxiety disorders.
  • Women continue to report lower levels of mental health compared with men – 52% vs. 58%.

National Child and Youth Mental Health Day:
  • 17% of children ages 2-5 years meet diagnostic criteria for mental health problems.
  • Canada's youth suicide rate is the third-highest in the industrialized world.
  • More than 75% of suicides involve men, but women attempt suicide 3 to 4 times more often.

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia:
  • May 17 is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal.

International Day to End Obstetric Fistula:

  • Only around 58% of women in low-income countries give birth with a medical professional present.
  • Around 15% of all pregnancies incur complications that require immediate medical attention.
