Women's Centres Connect
The collective voice of Women’s Centres in Nova Scotia

October 28, 2020

Hello and Welcome!

Some of you may know us well, and some of you may have only heard of us. For those of you who work with us regularly, thanks for all the great work you do.

For those of you who are getting to know us, we are the provincial association of Women’s Resource Centres in Nova Scotia. We are 9 distinct women’s resource centres that work together to challenge the oppression of women and advocate for social change. We believe women, in all their diversity, have the right to complete physical, mental, social, spiritual, economic and political well-being. As such, women are the experts of their own lives and have the right to make their own decisions, be treated with respect, human dignity and decency. Since 1988, it has been our mission is to support women in achieving this.

We are making some intentional changes in how we connect with our sister organizations. The most obvious is the sharing of this newsletter with you. If you prefer not to receive it, you can unsubscribe at any time. Each month we'll share relevant news and information, as well as a list of important dates that raise awareness of women's issues. Below you'll find the dates we'll observe for November.

We also have a new website and we'll be delighted if you'll have a look: womenconnect.ca.

And we're now on Facebook and LinkedIn. Since we're new, please click and connect with us!

Dates We Observe
November 2020

  • November 11 is Remembrance Day (We are closed.)
  • November 20 is The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR)
  • November 22-28 is National Addictions Awareness Week
  • November 25 to December 10 is 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

Facts Everyone Should Know

It is estimated that 35% of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner (not including sexual harassment) at some point in their lives. Evidence shows that women who have experienced physical or sexual intimate partner violence report higher rates of depression, having an abortion and acquiring HIV, compared to women who have not.

Issues Facing Women During the Pandemic

Women’s Centres across Nova Scotia continue to provide services to women to the best of our abilities. This includes bringing issues of injustice or disproportionate impact to the attention of our municipal, provincial and federal decision-makers.

The pandemic’s disproportionate impact on women has resulted in the limited gains that were made by women over recent decades to quickly roll backwards.

We are observing a widening economic gender gap! Find out the details on our blog...

CENTRES in the NEWS

Nova Scotia is the first province in the country to mark a Day of Recognition for the Nonprofit Sector. On October 14th, twenty nonprofit professionals and organizations were being recognized for their exemplary contributions to our communities with the Bhayana Family Foundation Invisible Champions Awards.

Our two favourites among those who received awards are:

  • Myrene Keating-Owen - LEA Place Women’s Resource Centre, Eastern Shore & Musquodoboit Valley
  • Trish McCourt - Tri-County Women’s Centre, Digby, Yarmouth & Shelburne

Congratulations to Myrene and Trish!
