Women's Centres Connect
The collective voice of Women’s Centres in Nova Scotia

April 24, 2024

There are many emotions that could be circulating among the awareness days in May. It is a month of multifaceted awareness, encompassing themes from mental health to family dynamics and societal inclusion.

National Child and Youth Mental Health Day on May 7th emphasizes nurturing connections between young individuals and caregivers, while Mental Health Week from May 6th to 10th amplifies community-level support. Mother’s Day on May 12th intends to celebrate maternal love and sacrifice but for some the emotions are much different, and we at Connect recognize that. The International Day for Families on May 15th highlights their vital role in society. May 17th observes the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, advocating for equality and inclusivity. See Connect’s blog on Celebrate IDAHOBIT that provides more reasons to celebrate. May 23rd focuses on ending obstetric fistula. Speech and Hearing Month, along with Vision Health Month, throughout May spotlight health conditions and the importance of prevention and support. Find out more about these important dates on our blog.

With this going on, we at Connect want to encourage you to find a moment or three to be all of you, and to breathe deep.

It is a growing community advocating for equal human and reproductive rights while fighting against discriminatory laws, norms, and practices. Members of this community celebrate IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia) on May 17th in 130 countries despite the fact that same-sex acts are illegal in 37 of them. How brave is that? Keep reading...
